LOUPEN, adj. A mistake for Lucken, I. 2. (4). Cf. the confusion of lopper- with lucken-gowan. See Lapper, v.1, III.Ayr. 1866 J. Paterson Hist. Ayr. III. 407:
"The lord wi' the loupen han' He lost his title and his lan'." The "loupen hand" is in allusion to the crest of the family [Boyd, Earl of Kilmarnock, forfeited in 1745], which is a dexter hand, couped at the wrist, erect, pointing with the thumb and two next fingers, the others turning down.
