LITHOSCOPE, v. To hunt for specimens of stones, to examine the geological structure of a place. Found later in Eng. in medical usage = a speculum for examining calculi in the bladder. The form lithoscopist is once found in Eng. (1693) = a geologist.Sc. 1709 Analecta Sc. (Maidment 1834) I. 377:
The ald house Bourn, wher you and I were lithoscoping.

[A nonce formation from Gk. λἴθος, a stone + Gk. σκοπς, one who watches or examines, σκοπεν, to examine, rather than -scope as in telescope, etc., from mod.Lat. -scopium.]
