LANT, n.2 Appar. a curtailed form of Eng. lantern, meaning a cog-wheel, a cupola or similar structure.Sc. 1738 W. Maitland Hist. Edb. (1753) 457:
The Stair-case has a large Lant in the Middle, by which it is proposed that a Patient may be carried by a Pulley in a Chair to all the different Galleries.
