INGAITHER, v. Also -gather; -gadder (Sh., ne.Sc.).

1. To gather in, collect, in gen. and specif. of crops in harvest (Bnff. 1880 Jam.; I., n. and m.Sc. 1958). Now fig. or arch. in Eng.Wgt. 1702 G. Fraser Lowland Lore (1880) 26:
That no beasts be found lying upon the streit aither night or day from the tyme the bear is abraid till the samen be ingathered.
Per. 1794 J. Donaldson Agric. Gowrie 9:
The commencement [of a lease] takes place in some cases at the term of Whitsunday as to the houses and garden, and to the arable land after ingathering the crop.
Bnff. 1866 Gregor D. Bnff. 88:
The lassies are a' oot at the in-gaitheran o' the claise.
Dmf. 1891 Daily News (23 Oct.) 5:
Sheaves of rotten corn, which the good husbandmen have not been able to ingather.

2. To collect (money or property due to trustees, executors, or the like) (Sc. 1946 A. D. Gibb Legal Terms 43). Hence ingatherer, a collector.Sc. 1703 Burgh Rec. Gsw. (1908) 367:
To make and constitut them their baillies in that pairt for that effect, in order to the ingathering of the rents of the saids lands.
Sc. 1760 Ib. (1912) 43:
To be clerk to the said stentmasters in casting on the said stent; as also to be collector and ingatherer thereof.
Arg. 1774 Stent Bk. Islay (1890) 82:
Their ffactor and Collector for uplifting and ingathering the Cess and Contingencies of Isla.
