INCORPORATE, ppl.adj. As in Eng. = formally constituted as a corporation, applied in Scot. esp. to the trade associations in a burgh. Now gen. in the form incorporated. Cf. Incorporation below.Gsw. 1711 Burgh Rec. Gsw. (1908) 464:
The deacons of the respective incorporat crafts in the burgh.
Sc. 1755 Johnson Dict. s.v.:
Incorporate, v., to form into a corporation, or body politick. In this sense they say in Scotland, the incorporate trades in any community.
Sc. 1783 Caled. Mercury (26 Feb.):
The Nine Incorporated Trades of Dundee, having this day met, to take into consideration the many grievances, which they, in common with all their Brethren in Scotland, have so long laboured under in point of Civil Liberty.
Sc. 1891 J. Colston Incorp. Trades Edb. l.:
The Incorporated Trades are, no doubt, an institution of the past, intimately connected with our citizen struggles for municipal independence. Though they are now merely benefit societies, they still retain the right to send, from among their Deacons, a representative to the Town Council [of Edinburgh], in the person of the Convener of Trades.
