HOYES, int. Also ho(ys) yes, hoyse, hoa yea. Aspirated Sc. variants of the Eng. Town-criers' call oyez! (Sc. 1808 Jam.). Used in 1801 quot. as a v. = to shout oyez.Dmf. 1801 A. Clerk Poems 27:
O will ye Ho Yes a' bedeen Till ance ye burst out baith yer een.
Slk. 1829 Hogg Shepherd's Cal. vii.:
Calling him at all the steane-crosses in the kingdom, in this here way — Ho yes! and a two times ho yes! and a three times ho yes!
Ayr. 1870 J. K. Hunter Life Studies 258:
And shouted, “Hoa yea! hoa yea!” three times.
