HISH, int.2, v.  Also heesh.

I. int. An exhortation to be quiet, ssh! (Cai., Abd., m.Lth., Kcb. 1957); a soothing sound used esp. in rocking a child to sleep (Sc. 1911 S.D.D.; Bnff., Abd., Ags., Per. 1957).

II. v.  to hush (a baby).wm.Sc. 1987 Anna Blair Scottish Tales (1990) 139:
In return the Hogloon would blow on the fire if it seemed in danger of going out, or stir the porridge to keep it free of lumps while the merry wife heeshed her baby if it cried, and did a hundred other little services.
