HAP, Haup, n.4 Irreg. Sc. forms of Eng. hip, the fruit of the wild rose, Rosa canina (n.Sc. 1808 Jam.; Kcd., Ags. 1956, haup). [Sc. hǫp, n.Sc. hɑp]Sc. 1788 Scots Mag. (Nov.) 558:
Ye've aftin seen the weel-filled hap Its rough seed cast in earth's wide lap.
Per. 1878 R. Ford Hame-spun Lays 56:
An' peeries, haups, an haws.

[O.Sc. has hep, id., from 1513, Mid.Eng. heppe, from O.E. hēope, with shortening of vowel. The a is irreg., and may be due to the influence of Whaup, a pod.]
