FANE, n. An elf, fairy.Kcb. 1806 J. Train Poet. Reveries 23:
The story ran to ilka ane How Kate was haunted wi' a fane.
Ib. 27:
By every fane that now Dwells in thy breast or on thy brow.

[The word seems to be a coinage of Train's, phs. influenced by Eng. fay. Connection with Sw. fan, Norw. fannen, the devil, is unlikely.]
