EXPENSES, n.pl. Sc. usages. Also †expenssis, -es, †expences.

1. = Eng. expense.Abd. 1710 Burgh Rec. Abd. (1872) II. 340:
The counsell . . . thought that the timber statu . . . might serve, they therefor appointed the samen to be put up by William Lindsay, as also the jetdo's [fountain] upon the said William his expenssis.
Abd. 1711 Ib. II. 346:
A publict theater to be erected in some publict place of the toune . . . upon the touns expensses once every three year.
Sc. 1827 Scott Chrons. Canongate, Croftangry iv.:
To his great charges and expenses he caused box the walls of the great parlour.

2. In Sc. law: = Eng. costs.Sc. 1709 Forbes Decisions 311:
Action . . . for Damage and Expences sustained by him in a former Process.
Abd. 1793 in Process Powis v. Fraserfield (1805) 30:
Finds Mr Forbes liable in expences, which modifies to L.1, 1s. Sterling, and decerns therefor, and for the expence of extracting.
Abd.16 1941:
The formula in court judgements awarding expenses runs: — and finds the pursuer (or defender) entitled to expenses as the same shall be taxed by the auditor of Court.
