EPHESIAN, n. A pheasant (Fif.10 1943, Gall. 1944 (per Rxb.4)). See also Feesant. [ə′fi:ʒən]Gall. 1825 Jam.2:
“An Ephesian cam into the kirk the day!” said an honest proprietor to some of his neighbours, who had been absent from public worship.
Fif. 1897 “S. Tytler” Witch-Wife iv.:
Not that Tyke will not catch a leveret or an ephesian when he has the chance.

[The form has been developed, prob. humorously, out of a pheesan.]
