DAUNTINGLY, DANTONLY, adv. Boldly, bravely; defiantly.Ayr. a.1788 Burns McPherson's Farewell (Cent. ed.) Chorus:
Sae rantingly, sae wantonly, Sae dauntingly gaed he, He play'd a spring, and danc'd it round Below the gallow's-tree.

[There are various versions of this song. Cramond in Annals of Bnff. (1891) I. prints several of these. On p. 107 he gives the form dantonly: "but dantonly and wantonly and rantonly I'll gae." Eng. daunting, ppl.adj., intimidating, + -ly. For the form dantonly, cf. danton s.v. Daunton.]
