COURT O(F) SESSION, n.phr. The supreme civil court of Scotland, instituted in 1532. The court “formerly consisted of fifteen judges, who sat all in one court. But [later] . . . the judges were required to sit in two Divisions; and . . . their number was reduced to thirteen — the Lord President, the Lord Justice-Clerk, and eleven Ordinary Lords” (Sc. 1890 Bell Dict. Law Scot. 1004).
