CLAM, n.2 Clang (as of a bell). Given in N.E.D. (last quot. 1822–1876) = the crash caused by ringing two or more bells of a peal together, but not recorded in Un. or Concise Eng. Dicts.Ags. 1881 A. S. Watt Smiddy Tam 2:
While loud her tongue wi' solemn clam, Pronounced the doom o' Smiddy Tam.
