CATASTROPHES, n.pl. Fragments, broken pieces. E.D.D. says “rare.” Not known to our correspondents.Per. 1898 E.D.D.:
Sic a lot o' catastrophes I have made o' that dish.
Ayr. 1826 Galt Last of the Lairds viii.:
John Angle wi' a rueful countenance gathered up the catastrophes of his oglet.

[An extension of the St.Eng. meaning to the result of the disaster.]
