BURGESS, v. (See quot.) [′bʌrdʒəs]Fif. 1825 Jam.2:
When the marches of a town were rode, it was customary, in their progress, to take those who had been made burgesses during the year, and to strike their buttocks on a stone. This was called burgessing.

[O.Sc. has burges, to make a burgess, 1664 (D.O.S.T.).]
