BRIDDLE SAITHE, n. “A local name for the coal-fish, Merlangus or Pollachius carbonarius, at four years. The word is becoming obsolete and I cannot find it in use among the younger men” (Abd.25 1937). The form briggle is also given (e.Sc. 1930 Fishery Board Gl.). The word may be connected in some way with Prinkle.
