BERRY, BERRIE, n.2 Name for a dog. [′bɛrɪ]Sh.(D) 1922 J. Inkster Mansie's Röd 32:
"Berry, come in ta my fit," I says ta wir dug.
Sh. 1932 J. M. E. Saxby Sh. Trad. Lore 196:
"Berrie" was a favourite name for a dog.

[There is a Sw. word bero, n., dependence, v., rest upon (Falk and Torp), but as the accent is on the second syllable, any connection between the Sh. and Sw. words is doubtful. D.O.S.T. has Burry, idem, c.1470-1480.]
