BABORD, n. Larboard.Fif. (Buckhaven) 1833 Chambers's Edin. Jnl. No. 98 (14 Dec.) 364/3:
Mr R. Bonthron . . . recollects that, in his youth, the older fishermen . . . employed the term babord for larboard.

[O.Sc. baburd; see A. Montgomerie c.1579 Poems (S.T.S. 1887) 209: On baburd syde the vhirling of the sand; On steirbuird syd, the roks lay off the land. Found also in Douglas Aen. 1513. Of Gmc. origin, prob. through Fr. bâbord. O.N. bakborði, O.E. bæcbord, Norse bagbord, Sw. babord, Du. bakboord, L.Ger. bakbord, all = the left side of a ship, to which the steersman turned his back.
