ATGAUN, ATGAN, ATGAIN, n., usually pl., atgauns, etc. Also in the form atgeong (Ork. 1949). See geong, Gang, n. Behaviour, ongoings. [′at-gɑnz, -gjɑnz]Ork.(D) 1908 J. T. S. Leask in Old-Lore Misc., Ork. Shet., etc. I. viii. 318:
Da atgans waar far waar nor a meetin' o' the Glesgow Toon Cooncil.
Ib. 1929 IX. ii. 78:
Da maakan o' a horseman i' dis wey waas a unco wheer atgain teu.
Ork. 1929 Marw.:
Atgauns . . . ongoings, behaviour, almost exactly = atfares. Atfares is applied, however, rather to the individual's bearing or behaviour, and atgauns to the objective results.
