[The latest quot. for Eng. in N.E.D. is dated 1571 (north. Eng.). O.Sc. has ennet-seidis (1549 Compl. of Scot. vi. 67, and an(n)et, anethe, etc.). First part from Fr. anet, Lat. anethum, Gk. ἄνηθον, dill.]
