ALMANIE WHISTLE, n. (See quot.) Not known to our correspondents.Abd. 1808 Jam.:
Almanie whistle, a flage[o]let of a very small size, used by children.

["The name intimates, that whistles of this kind had been originally imported into Scotland from Germany; and that they had been early imported, before this country was known by that designation which has been adopted, or rather revived, in later times" (Jam.). "Playand upon the almany quhissil," Abd. B. Records, 1574 (D.O.S.T.). Almanie is freq. as an attrib. adj. in O.Sc.]
