1. A shield; an article of armour, carried in the hand or attached to the arm or body, to ward off strokes or thrusts from hostile weapons. Also attrib. with ledderis.In (4) below, referring to the tapering shape of one kind of shield.Freq., linked with hauberc, also helm, to emphasise the defensive role of the shield, or in collocation with spere, in lit. and fig. applications, signifying the need to be prepared for both attack and defence in combat.(1) 1375 Barb. vi 219.
