Puppie, n. (e.m.E. popi(e (1486), pup(p)ee (1542), -ie, -y, a toy dog, a young dog, and applied contempt. to persons, but in these Sc. instances in sense of e.m.E. puppet(te (1538), ME and e.m.E. pop(p)et (14th c.), a doll or a puppet etc., F. poupette (16th c. in OED), F. poupée, OF popee (13th c. in Littré), doll, toy. In puppie (= puppet-) play. Cf. also Pupké.) — 1667 Old Ross-shire I 60.
