[ME and e.m.E. present (a 1300), -ente (c 1450), prissent (1566), adj., also adv. (c 1381), OF present (11th c. in Littré; mod. F. présent), L. præsens, præsent- present, prompt, pres. p. of præ-esse to be at hand. Cf. Present,n.2]In sense 3 (and, rarely, sense 1) also with plural inflection.
