Substance, Substans, n. Also: substaunce. [ME and e.m.E. substance (Cursor M.), substaunce (a1325), substans (1402), F. substance (c1120 in Larousse), L. substantia.]

1. Essential nature, essence.Chiefly, of the divine essence common to, and uniting, the three Persons of the Trinity.(1) a1450 Fifteen Ois 276.
