OF. apentis, apendis, -deis, med. L. (Eng.) appendicium a penthouse, also med. L. appenditium ‘small sacred building dependent upon a larger church’ (Du Cange). Cf. Penthouse n.] A penthouse.a. A structure consisting of a (? chiefly or only, sloping) roof, with or without enclosing walls, attached to a higher wall such as the outer wall of a building, forming a covered passage-way, corridor, shelter, porch or out-house. b.
