Pedagogy, -ie, Paedagogie, n. [L. pædagōgīum a school for pages, in med. L. a place of instruction: see Pedagog(e n.1 and Pedagog(e n.2Cf. e.m.E. pedagogie, -y, instruction (1583), the profession of teaching (1623), a place of instruction, school or college (c 1625), and F. pédagogie (16th c.).]

a. Appar. the original designation of the teaching institution, with the building housing it and the body of teachers comprising it, of the Faculty of Arts of the Universities of St. Andrews and of Glasgow, respectively. b. An alternative term for the University or College (of St. Andrews or of Glasgow) viewed as a teaching institution.The term was later superceded by the more general terms college or university.The pedagogy of St. Andrews was founded in 1430 (see Coll. St. Salvator 7), that of Glasgow c 1453 (see J. D. Mackie Univ. Glasg. 1451–1951 (1954) 44 f.).(1) 1532–3 Haddington Corr. 253.
