Par-, Perdé, interj. Also: -die, -dy. [ME. and e.m.E. par deu (c 1290), parde(e (Chaucer), perdé (a 1485), perdye (1548), OF. par dé (13th c. in Hatz.-Darm.), ‘by God!’, F. pardieu, also colloq. pardi, as an oath or asseveration.] As an asseveration: Assuredly; certainly; indeed.Common, but only in the rhyming position, in verse; not found in prose before c 1570. 1375 Barb. vii. 436.
