Orchard-, Orchart-lit(t, n. Also: ortchard-, orchaird-, orcheard-, orcheart-, or(s)chert-, orchyeardand Ochart-litt and Orchatlit. The name of some dye.Possibly an altered form by popular etymology of e.m.E. orchell (1483), orchall (1532–3), OF. orchel, the red or violet dye, orchil, obtained from certain lichens.(a) 1575 Edinb.
