Charterhous, Chairterhous, n.1 Also: -house, -howse; chartirhous, chairterous, chairtourhouse. [e.m.E. charter house (1534), from AF. chartrouse, F. chartreuse. Cf. Charterour.] A Carthusian monastery; spec. that in Perth founded by James I. 1510 Breadalbane P. (Reg. H.) No. 37.
