(Wattir ȝet,) Wattir yett, Watter ȝet(t, -yet(t, n. Also: wattyr ȝet, watter ȝeitt, -yoit, walter yet, -yait, watter ghaitt, -gait, water-gett, -ghaitte. [ME and e.m.E. water-gate (c1380), watur-ȝate (a1400), watyr gat(e (c1440), wateryat(te (1458-9).] An entrance gate close to or in some other way related to water, esp. those in Edinburgh and the Canongate.For further information see Stuart Harris The Place Names of Edinburgh their Origins and History (1996).(a) 1569 Edinb.
