Wan(e, Won(e, n.1 Also: van(e, wayn(e, waine, wown. [ME and e.m.E. wan(e (a1225), won (c1275), wan, wone (both Manning), woon (Chaucer).]

1. A place of habitation or shelter, a (room in a) dwelling. Also referring to a group of buildings. Also transf. and fig.In pl. freq. with singular referent. [Cf. OE wununesse a dwelling place.]sing. c1450-2 Howlat 667 (A).
