Upgaistrie, Up-, Opgestrie, n. [f. as Upgaister n.] ‘The custom by which, in the Shetland and Orkney system of udal tenure, a holder of land could, with the consent of his heirs if they were unable to maintain him, transfer his property to another in return for lifelong support’ (SND, s.v. Opgestrie n.). —(a) 1604 Shetland Sheriff Ct. (ed.) 154.
