Tyre, Tyar, n.1 Also: tire, tyare, tyer. [e.m.E. tyre (c1425), tier (a1548), tire (1639), aphetic f. Attyre n.; also, 17th c. Eng. tiar (1614), tiare (1616), F. tiare, L. tiāra.] (Used with reference to) something worn, chiefly or only, on the head; esp. a ceremonial headdress; later, ? a tiara.[The Alex. quot. may be a misunderstanding of the F. reference to the city of Tyre.]The 1603 Treas. Acc. quot. may perhaps be attrib. ?1438 Alex. ii 8710.
