[ME and e.m.E. stan wal (Layamon), ston wal (Chaucer), stoon wal (1463), stone wall (1546); Stan(e n. and Wal(l n.] A wall built of stone, esp. the wall of a house or other building; less commonly, a boundary wall (cf.
