[Sc. form repr. an earlier, perhaps continental compound of sukkar and rosat (cf. Rosate n.²), with syncope of the vowels in the first element. Cf. OF chucre rosach (Tournai, 1392-1410), succre rosat (1342 in Tobler-Lommatzsch), ME suger rosette, (1398, gl. L. succura rosacia), sugre roseet (c1450), med. L.
