Repose, -pois(e, v.2 Also: -poes; -poss-, -poiss-. [ME and e.m.E. repose reflex. (a1485), intr. (a1548), tr. (a1562), F. reposer (c1112 in Larousse), late L. repausāre.]

1. intr. To take rest, as by sitting, lying, etc.; to cease from physical activity or exertion. Also, transf., to rest in death.In the passive, also const. of (exertion).active 1456 Hay II 125/18.
