[Late ME and e.m.E. wytyng (c1425), whytynge (15th c.), MDu. wītinc, -ing(h, wittinc, -ing, wyting, MLG wītink. Cf. ON hvítingr a kind of whale, and Quhit(e)-fisch(e n.] A whiting.Also with defining words, as somer quhitting, tug quhyting.
