A puncheon.A large cask for liquids (chiefly, wine), dry goods, fish, meat, etc. b. Also, one of a definite capacity; hence also occas. as a measure of capacity.Also put to various other uses, esp. in scaffolds (? serving as the base of each of the main uprights), and (? when broken up into staves) as a source of wooden pins and nails.Also, rarely, pl. without inflection.Also attrib. with -gir(d (= gird, hoop), -heid, also with -creishe (= grease, ? as packed in puncheons).For further examples, see the index to Treas.
