Preserve, n. [f. Preservev.: cf. e.m.E. preserve (1600) fruit preserve.] a. A protecting agent against illness, a prophylactic. = Preservative n., Preservatio(u)n n. 4. b. plur. Prob., protectors for the eyes, ‘spectacles which magnify little or nothing, used for preserving the sight’ (Jam.), as in the mod. dial. — c1552 Lynd. Mon. 4926.
