Postulat, n.1, p.p. and ppl. adj. Also: -ate, -ait, postol-, posstelat. [L. postulāt-us p.p. of postulāre (see Postule v., Postulat v.), in med. L. (Latham c 1250) noun as below, MDu. postulaet (c 1433–9), MLG postulat (see Postulat n.2).]

1. noun. A person nominated to a superior ecclesiastical benefice, such as a bishopric or abbacy, although canonically disqualified, while he awaited the Pope's dispensation of the impediment, and consequent confirmation.The canonical disqualifications included (espec.) the holding of a similar office, not being in orders, and being under age.(1) 1497 Acta Conc.
