Pand, Paund, n.2 Also: pande, painde, pawnd; paun. [e.m.E. paund (once, 1554), otherwise only Sc. in this form (cf. Pawn(e n.2).Cf. OFris. pand, MDu. pant (pand-; Du. pand), OHG., MHG. pfant (Germ. pfand), but also OF. pand, pant, rare variants of pan a pledge or surety, also plunder, spoil.]

1. A pledge, surety, gage.An article or sum of money (also, esp. in Orkney, said of landed property) left in the hands of another as security for a debt or for the performance of some action; latterly freq. a security payable by betrothed persons, returnable on orderly completion of the marriage, also mariage pand, s.v. Mariag(e 6 (1).In plur. ? sometimes with sing. application.Latterly freq. (to lay) in pand, also once paindes, (to put) in pawn, (lay down) as a pledge or security (of or for a loan etc.).(1) c 1145 Edinb. Chart. 8.]
