Nardus specudy, specarye. Also: specatyve. (Corruptly derived f. a confusion of the nom. and gen. forms of L. nardus spīcātus (gen. nardi spīcāti) nard, spikenard, which appears (e.g. John xii. 3) in the latter form in the Vulgate. OE., ME. and e.m.E. have nardus in the Latin form and ME. (Wyclif) and e.m.E. narde in the derived OF. form: see also Narde n. The form specatyve is a further alteration on a quasi-L. adjectival pattern.) — c1500 Makc. MS. iv. 11.
