Mercat-met. Also: mercatt-, merkat-, merket- and -mett. [Of uncertain, and possibly two-fold, derivation: cf. (1) Met n. a measure and (2) Met p.p. and ppl. a. measured.] Measured by, or as by, the standard measures used in a public market or markets. Also with the merkat met, of mercat mett, id.(1) 1488 Liber Aberbr. 259.
