Maine, Mayn(e, Mane, n. Also: myan. [North. e.m.E. mayn(e breid (1509), maine bread; aphetic f. Demayn, wh. was itself ellipt. for AF. pain demaine ‘lord's bread’.] White bread of the finest quality.Most commonly in maine brede, but also as a simple noun (or by ellipsis) and in brede of maine; also comb. with laif, fardell, bun and flour, meill, mill, multure.(1) 1443 Edinb.
