Lorane, n.2 Plur. loranis, lorance. [? f. the name of the duchy, or of the cross, of Lorraine.] A name applied appar. to Scottish testoons in the period 1556–9: the two later quots. have been taken to refer to the testoon of Francis and Mary of 1558–9, which had a cross of Lorraine on either side of the monogram FM on the reverse, but this leaves obscure the 1557 occurrence (the date of which is not in doubt). — 1557 Justiciary Ct. Bk. MS. (Reg. H.) April 10.
