[Corresp. to late ME. and e.m.E. clappalde (1477), -olte (1481–90), clapholt (1614), -hoult (1660), MLG. klapholt, MDu. klapholt, clap-, klaphout, with kn- for cl- as in e.m.Da. knapholt (16th c.) beside klapholt (and cf. also Knarholt).
