Anniversar, adj. and n. Also: annywerseyr. [L. anniversārius. Cf. OF. anniversaire, -aere, early ME. anniversarie n., e.m.E. anniversarie, -ary adj.]
1. adj. Recurring annually; yearly, annual.c1420 Wynt. v. 3078 C (it is oyssit ilka ȝhere, as the tyme fallis annywerseyr). 1513 Doug. iii. v. 38 (anniuersar sacrifyce); v. ii. 10 (the tyme anniuersar). 1581 Burne Disput. 165 (thair dayis anniuersar, or returning be ȝeirlie course).
2. n. A mass said annually on the anniversary of a person's death; the payment made for this. 1411 Ayr Fr. Preach. Chart. 45.
For the anniversar of that Alis Cambell yher be yher till be done 1480 Peebles B. Rec. 186.
Ten schillings be yeir for ane anniuersar yeirly to be don in the said kyrk 1491 Cart. S. Nich. Aberd. 257.
