WHIZ, v. Also whizz, whiss, and deriv. whizzen. Sh. forms of Quiz, q.v., to inquire, ask, question, esp. inquisitively (Sh. 1866 Edm. Gl., 1914 Angus Gl.; I.Sc. 1974). See W, letter, 7.(2)(ii).Sh. 1919 T. Manson Peat Comm. 194:
Erty wis set on bi Lowra ta go an whiss oot if dey couldna be pitten him i da motor.
Ork. 1931 J. Leask Peculiar People 127:
A'm afen whizzened, bit nane seems ta ken, waas dere miny leeshances o' dat kind gaen.

[The form whizzen is due to conflation with question, Whestin.]
